to me
Good evening Barry,
Thanks for getting in touch and for taking a good in depth look at the quotation provided. To answer your questions in chronological order:
Age related increases: There are 3 main factors that all insurers for private medical insurance take into consideration at renewal, these are in no particular order; age, medical inflation and claims history.
However, we’re not just here in a capacity to set you up and leave you to it, we’re here for your continued support free of charge throughout your policy term to help guide you and service and renew your policy, therefore if you ever need us to negotiate terms at renewal with the insurer direct on your behalf, we’d be more than happy to. There are a number of options open to help keep your costs minimal.
One of these things interestingly with Aviva you can action yourself once the policy is set up; namely, a questionnaire entitled My Health Counts on the Aviva website. On successful completion of this form you can be entitled up to an additional 15% discount on top of your no claims discount, which starts at 72%, meaning, your policy could actually be cheaper at renewal by comparison to your first year, which is really fantastic and a unique offering on the market currently.
No claims discount: As stated above, the entry percentage is level 13: 72%, should you happen to make a claim over £250, the NCD drops 3 levels to level 10: 63%. If your claim is under £250 your NCD remains unaffected, (N.B. using the remote GP services for advice doesn’t classify as a claim) if you do not make a claim in your first year, your NCD increases to level 14: 75%. As mentioned too above, the questionnaire could entitle you to an extra 15% discount on top of this come renewal.
Alcohol misuse: A general exclusion that all medical insurers apply is any treatment or condition related to drug abuse. As long as you’re not substituting single malt scotch whisky in place of milk on your corn flakes in the morning, a few extra glasses of wine won’t negatively impact your cover. If it were a chronic consumption that directly led to liver failure or some other such ailment this would not be covered. As you say, your liver function has been tested and is proved to be well so I see no issue in this respect.
Change of address: That’s not a problem, just let us and/or Aviva know as soon as you know and we can action that a click of a button.
Cover and add-ons: There are no add ons for dental and optical applied, on the illustration of benefit document, anything with an ‘X’ next to it denotes things not included in this policy.
For wat you’re after, this is the best value on the market to guarantee rapid access directly to the private sector to eradicate the concern of any potential waiting lists and slow service from the NHS and covers a lot of eventualities as standard. By and large this would be considered a fairly basicpolicy, but still gives you for example all your scans, operations and cancer cover in full (to name but a few aspects) for your peace of mind.
---------------------------------------------
Hopefully you should never need to use the policy, but the way things are heading with the NHS, the difference between having this cover or not could without fear of hyperbole be a matter or life or death.
I’m happy to provide you any further clarification and if email is preferable for these things, that shouldn’t be an issue. If you did wish to proceed though I would require us to do this over the telephone, I would only require about 10 minutes of your time just to confirm a couple of additional statements to be complaint with the Financial Conduct Authority as we’re a regulated operation.
I hope this provides a comprehensive response to your queries and I look forward to speaking with you further tomorrow!
Many thanks,Lewis Samuels

Hi Lewis,
I took a reasonable look at those documents
On balance I'll feel ok with £137 pcm and £200 pa xs - BUT there are questions arising:
* Age-related Increases?
* NCD - this is all far too complicated. Am I starting at 69%? Please get Aviva to explain their policy better.
* Alcohol Misuse. What does this mean?
As stated, I drink more wine than 'recommended' - though Liver function tests have been good for the past 40 years.
* Change of address. Hopefully North Wiltshire will be my target later this year to get nearer to grandchildren.
All I'm looking for is medical help (given a failing NHS) if something serious happens.
We can forget the Dental and Optical add-ons. Much easier to self-fund.
Rarely claimed any insurance, recall in 1980 against a Removal company who somehow managed to stain my brand new sofa when moving to Shetland. They paid.
Car Insurance has always resolved and never affected my no claims. Though I don't drive now for DVLA mess ups.
They've stamped epilepsy on my file and despite medical refutations 6-7 years ago, and SAR, frankly I can't be bothered.
Taxis and (haha) Hospital transport seem to work, compared to the cost of running a car.
You scheduled a phone call at 13:00 on Tuesday. Email is always more efficient. Please answer the above.
Then I'm happy to go ahead.
Barry
